Getting Started

1. Insert the PAC-MAN cartridge into your Atari 7800 ProSystem as explained in
your Owner’s Manual, and turn on your console.

2. Plug a controller into the left controller jack for one player, and another
in the right controller jack for two players.

3. Move the controller handle forward or backward, or press [Select], to choose
a one- or two-player game. Move the controller handle to the left or right to
choose a maze difficulty level: Teddy Bear, Cherries, Strawberry, 1st Orange,
2nd Orange, 1st Apple, 2nd Apple, 1st Melon, 2nd Melon, 1st Galaxian, 2nd
Galaxian, 1st Bell, 2nd Bell, and Key.

4. PAC-MAN will move in the direction you move the controller handle.

5. Press [Pause] to pause a game; press it again to resume play.

Playing The Game

Keep PAC-MAN alive. Guide him and guard him; protect him from the monsters.
Gobble dots, energy pills, fruit, bells, Galaxian ships, keys, and blue monsters
to score points. Eat all the dots on the screen and the maze starts over.

The game starts with three or five PAC-MAN lives (depending on the difficulty
switch setting — see DIFFICULTY SETTINGS), which are indicated by the small
PAC-MAN symbols at the lower left corner of the screen. When game play begins,
PAC-MAN moves to the starting position at the center, close to the bottom of the
screen. Use the joystick to guide PAC-MAN around the maze.

As PAC-MAN passes over the dots, he gobbles them up and you score points
(see SCORING). Also in the maze are four large energy pills and four monsters.
The monsters are out to devour PAC-MAN, but the energy pills give PAC-MAN the
necessary power to gobble up the monsters before the monsters gobble him up.

When PAC-MAN eats an energy pill, the monsters turn blue with fright. PAC-MAN
can then chase the monsters and gobble them up. But watch out: when the monsters
start blinking, run quickly — they’re about to change back to their true colors.
The more monsters you gobble up with one energy pill, the more points you score.

For a tasty bonus treat, PAC-MAN delights in munching fruit. Cherries,
strawberries, oranges, apples, melons, and other bonus objects appear at the
center of the screen. They only last a few seconds, so grab the fruit quickly to
score bonus points. After munching all the fruit, PAC-MAN can collect these
other valuable bonus prizes: bells, Galaxian ships, and keys (see SCORING, for
the specific points you can score throughout the game).

Use the joystick to slide PAC-MAN in and out of the openings on either side of
the maze. If PAC-MAN exits on the right, he re-enters on the left; if he exits
on the left, he re-enters on the right. But beware: the monsters can travel
these routes, too!

Difficulty Settings

Use the Left Difficulty Switch (located next to the left joystick connector)
to indicate the number of lives you wish to start with. Moving the switch to
the left gives you five lives to start with (this is the easier setting).
Moving the switch to the right gives you three lives to start. Use the Right
Difficulty Switch (located next to the right joystick connector) to indicate
the type of maze you wish to enter. Moving the switch to the left gives you
the “normal” PAC-MAN maze (the one you are most likely familiar with; the
easier setting). Moving the switch to the right gives you a more difficult maze,
with additional twists and turns (although you have two more sets of side tunnels!)

Survival Tactics

- Novice PAC-MAN players should practice eating all the dots to clear the maze
before trying to eat monsters.
- Stay close to an energy pill before you eat it, and tease the monsters into
moving toward you. When the monsters get close, eat the energy pill and gobble
up as many of them as you can.
- Use the side openings of the maze like escape tunnels. Move to either side
while quickly evading the monsters.
- Use strategy, and try to save your energy pills until you absolutely need
them. When you are in a hurry, travel a route already cleared of dots. You move
20 percent faster if there are no dots in your path.
- Look for patterns in the maze. When you find one that works well, memorize it.

Scoring

Scores appear at the top of the screen. The score for Player 1 is on the left;
Player 2’s score is on the right. The highest score is displayed at the center
of the screen, and will continue to accumulate points until the 7800 console is
turned off, unless you are using the High Score cartridge.

Dot 10 points

2nd Monster 400 points
